The Walkman vs. The iPod How Apple Destroyed Sony's Greatest Invention

Most people figure Apple invented portable music with the iPod in 2001. The real story starts in Tokyo in 1979, with a stripped-down tape recorder called the Walkman, and it ends with Sony handing away the entire category it created

This video walks through how Sony co-founder Masaru Ibuka, tired of carrying a heavy cassette recorder on long flights, asked his engineers to build something smaller, and how that simple request turned into one of the best-selling gadgets ever made. We get into the odd details most people never hear, like the Walkman's two headphone jacks and its "hotline" talk button, the silent Yoyogi Park launch demo, and how Sony sold close to 400 million Walkman-brand players across all formats.

Then we get to the part that actually matters: why Sony lost. You'll learn how the company reached digital music two full years before the iPod, in 1999, and still managed to lose, mostly because it owned a record label and was so scared of piracy that it locked its own players down with clunky software and formats nobody wanted. Apple, owning no label, just made it easy.

A few things you'll take away: why the Walkman brand is somehow still alive while the iPod is the one that's actually dead, how the cassette quietly came back in the 2020s, and why owning both the song and the player became Sony's trap instead of its advantage.

Following a recent move, I rediscovered a box of my old, forgotten CDs. Instead of storing them away and forgetting about their existence once more, I decided to give them a second life through a refurbished iPod. This short film is an exploration of slow tech, digital decentralization, and what happens when we choose the slow friction of intention over the endless rush of modern convenience.

Behind the Scenes: The Rule of Intention
To mirror the philosophy of the iPod, I wanted the filmmaking process behind this video to be just as deliberate. This is my very first time shooting with the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K, and I set a strict rule for myself: all manual, and zero reshoots. Every frame, every focus pull, and every lighting setup had to be executed with absolute intention. If a shot wasn't perfect, it stayed in the film. No safety nets. Just raw, focused storytelling.
