Today we’re going to explore how the very first iPod was developed, how it was almost cancelled before release, and how it caused an actual explosion on Apple’s campus.

Now Apple became involved with digital music in 1999, but before we get into that, I want to point out that Apple was a much different company back then. They’d just narrowly escaped bankruptcy and were under tremendous pressure to start generating revenue for shareholders. And their biggest money maker was the Mac. In fact, they didn’t really make anything else other than Mac computers and had no experience in creating handheld devices like MP3 players. So with Apple in this extremely stressful and tight financial position, you probably wouldn't expect them to take a big risk and essential bet part the company on a new category of device. But with Steve Jobs at the helm, that’s exactly what they did.

Apple announced Tuesday it will stop manufacturing the iPod Touch, the last model still offered by the tech giant. TODAY hosts reflect on how the iconic MP3 player changed their lives.

One year after Apple discontinues the "classic" iPod... values soaring on old iPods

Do you have an old iPod sitting in your dresser drawer somewhere?

Don't get rid of it: it may soon be worth a lot of money!

Classic is now a Classic

The newspaper The Guardian first reported that apple's iPod Classic is now selling for 4 times its original price in some eBay listings.

The classic -- which holds up to 40,000 songs -- was discontinued last year, because most people now put music on their phones.

But the big iPod is now soaring in value as a result, leading some tech bloggers to wonder if Apple made a mistake by killing it off.

iPhones do not hold anywhere near the music library of the big iPod, and many people don't want all that music on their phone.

Prices on eBay are doubling the original price. It's not just old Apple technology either -- flip phones are making a comeback.

talking about why I love using an iPod classic in 2026 and how / why I switched to one. I'll probably keep using a DAP from now on and owning my music, even if it doesn't end up being an iPod forever. I definitely recommend switching if you're fed up with streaming services and things distracting you from your music!
