This was my 2nd ever TV appearance, taking tech stuff on TV with Steve Liebmann on the Today Show. Gadgets of the day included the U2 themed iPod and the cluncky looking Nintendo DS. This aired on November 23 2004

After many previous collaborations, Irish rock group U2 and Apple again partnered to release the sole special-edition iPod to date. The iPod U2 (20GB only) shares most of its characteristics with the fourth-generation iPod but boasts a few key differences. The most noticeable is the player's black body and Ferrari-red scrollwheel--it definitely pops. Flip over the device, and you'll find another distinguishing design tweak: the signatures of all four U2 band members have been laser-etched in the iPod's shiny, silver rear casing, which also features a U2 stamp and the words special edition.

So as per my usual addiction to buying iPods I thought why not go ahead and add the U2 iPod Classic 5th generation to my collection. This is the 2nd U2 iPod Classic, the other being the 4th gen. And I got it off eBay for a decent price. Its hard drive is slowly dying but I wont be doing any iFlash mods or any other iPod custom mod to it..it's just gonna be for my collection.

I found it on eBay and it is in a greeeeat shape and the packaging is so nice!

The iPod U2 Special Edition was a limited series of the classic iPod in several versions. The U2 Special Edition iPods are identifiable by a distinct red click wheel within a black front surface. They also feature the autographs of the U2 band members etched onto the back.


On October 26, 2004, the first U2 iPod was released, based on a 4th-generation iPod with a monochrome screen, 20 GB drive, and a chrome-plated back. The list price was US$349 / CA$499.

On June 28, 2005, the second U2 iPod was released, based on a iPod photo with a color display, 20 GB drive, and a chrome-plated back. Its price was lowered to US$329.

On June 6, 2006, the third U2 iPod was released, based on a 5th-generation iPod with a larger color screen, 30 GB drive, and black metal back. Its pricing remained at US$329.

On September 12, 2006, the fourth and final U2 iPod was released, based on an enhanced version of the 5th-generation iPod with a brighter color screen, 30 GB drive, and black metal back. Its price was lowered to US$279.

The first two U2 iPods included an iTunes Music Store coupon to get US$50 off the purchase of The Complete U2. The later two models included a coupon to freely download 30 minutes of music videos and interviews with the band.
